Free · 3 summaries / month · No signup · No card

Summarize a PDF, free — 3 per month, no signup.

A free PDF summarizer with honest limits. PDF Pro sponsors 3 AI summaries per month per user — no card, no email, no trial countdown. The PDF binary stays in your browser; only the extracted text passages travel to the AI for synthesis. Need more volume? Pro is 250/month at $6.99, Pro Plus is 600/month at $12.99.

No card. No email. No "verify to download."

PDF parsing, text extraction, and citation linking run in your browser via pdf.js. The AI synthesis itself runs server-side on a frontier LLM (Anthropic Claude) — that is the part PDF Pro pays for, and it is what the monthly limits meter. Related: chat with PDF, translate PDF AI, compress without upload.

What "free" usually means online — and what it means here

Most "free PDF summarizer" pages run the same playbook: free until the part you actually need, then a wall. PDF Pro is structured differently — 3 sponsored AI summaries per month, no card, no email, no surprise paywall mid-document.

Typical "free" tier

What "free" usually hides

  • closePage cap — first 5 or 10 pages summarized, the rest paywalled.
  • closeWatermark appended to the output: "Summarized with [Tool] — upgrade to remove."
  • closeSign-up wall — must verify email to copy or download the summary.
  • closeModel downgrade — free users get a stripped-down model that misses headings, examples, conclusions.
  • closeTrial countdown — "free for 3 days" then auto-charges the card on file.
  • close3-files-per-day cap on the no-account tier.
This tool

What free means here

  • checkNo page cap. 4 pages or 400, the whole document gets summarized.
  • checkNo watermark. Output is plain text or markdown — paste it anywhere, including commercial work.
  • checkNo sign-up. Open the page, drop the file, copy the result. No email, no account.
  • checkSame pipeline. Free output uses the same Claude-class LLM, same parser, same citation logic as paid tiers. Tier only changes volume.
  • checkNo timer. No 3-day trial, no card on file, no auto-conversion.
  • checkHonest monthly cap. 3 sponsored AI summaries per month. No daily reset gimmicks, no surprise lockouts mid-document.

What 3 free summaries per month buys you

Four full features at the free tier — not teasers, not previews. Each AI summary on free uses the same Claude-class LLM and the same in-browser parser as Pro and Pro Plus.

bolt
TL;DR summaries
Drop a PDF, get a 3–5 sentence overview in seconds. The whole document, not just the first page. Output is plain text — copy, paste, ship.
view_module
Section-by-section breakdown
Each heading gets its own paragraph summary. Useful for skimming long reports, syllabi, or whitepapers without reading every page.
format_list_bulleted
Key-point extraction
A bullet list of the document's claims, conclusions, and decisions — the part you actually need for a meeting brief or a study sheet.
layers
Multi-document summary
Drop several PDFs at once and get a combined overview — shared themes, differences, per-doc highlights. Counts as one AI operation against the monthly limit.
Honest pricing transparency

Pricing model, honestly explained

The free tier is free because PDF Pro sponsors it, not because the underlying tool is free to run. Each summary calls a frontier LLM (Anthropic Claude) over an API, and that call has a real per-request cost. We absorb that cost up to 3 AI summaries per month per user so the tool stays accessible without a card.

What runs in your browser: PDF parsing via pdf.js, text extraction, page-citation linking, and output rendering. The PDF binary itself never leaves the tab. What runs server-side: the LLM synthesis that turns extracted passages into a TL;DR. Only the text passages required for the summary are sent to the AI — the file body, embedded images, and metadata stay on your device.

Beyond 3/month: Pro is $6.99/mo for 250 AI operations, and Pro Plus is $12.99/mo for 600. That paid revenue covers the API bills for both paid usage and the sponsored free tier. No dark patterns, no auto-charge, no surprise paywall mid-summary — you simply hit the monthly cap and either wait for the reset or upgrade.

Limits we do have (so you know upfront)

Honest pricing means honest limits. Three real constraints exist, and we list them on the landing page rather than after you've uploaded a file.

01
3 AI summaries per month on free
Each summary is a real LLM call we pay for, so the free tier is capped at 3 per month per user. Hit the cap and you can either wait for the monthly reset or upgrade — Pro is 250/month at $6.99, Pro Plus is 600/month at $12.99. No card is required to use the 3 free.
02
Image-only scans need OCR first
If the PDF is a scan with no embedded text layer, there are no characters for the parser to extract — just pixels. Run OCR first to add a text layer, then the summary works normally. We surface this in the UI instead of returning empty output.
03
Very large PDFs hit browser memory
Because pdf.js loads the file into the tab to extract text, the whole PDF has to fit in browser memory. Files above ~500 MB or a few thousand pages may stall on lower-end hardware. Workaround: split the PDF first, or summarize per chapter — each chunk still counts as one AI operation against the monthly limit.

Output quality at the free tier

Rough quality expectation across three common document types. Free uses the same Claude-class LLM and the same in-browser pdf.js parser as Pro and Pro Plus, so per-summary quality is identical — the tier only changes monthly volume.

Document type
What you get
Quality vs paid AI
Research paper
12–40 pages, structured headings
Abstract-equivalent TL;DR, per-section breakdown matching the paper's structure (Intro / Methods / Results / Discussion), bullet list of the main findings.
★★★★★
Same as paid
Contract
5–60 pages, dense legal language
TL;DR of the deal, key obligations per party, term and termination clauses, payment terms, liability caps. Defined-term resolution is included.
★★★★★
Same as paid
Transcript
Meeting / interview / podcast
Topic-by-topic summary, decisions reached, action items extracted, speaker-level highlights when speaker labels are present in the source.
★★★★★
Same as paid

Per-summary quality is identical across free and paid — same model, same pipeline. The only thing that changes between tiers is the monthly volume cap (3 vs 250 vs 600 AI operations).

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free or is there a hidden trial?
Genuinely free, with no trial timer. The free tier gives you 3 AI summaries per month — no card on file, no signup required, no auto-conversion to paid. Pro is $6.99/mo for 250 AI operations and Pro Plus is $12.99/mo for 600. The 3 free summaries are sponsored by PDF Pro: each call hits a real LLM (Anthropic Claude) which has a real per-call cost, and we cover that cost up to the monthly cap so you can use the tool without paying.
Do I need to create an account?
No. The 3 free monthly AI summaries do not require signup, email, or a card. The browser keeps a local count so you stay anonymous. You only sign up if you want a paid plan (Pro at 250/mo or Pro Plus at 600/mo) or if you need usage to follow you across devices.
Is the summary watermarked or branded?
No. The output is plain text or markdown — no "Summarized with PDF Pro" header, no trailing promo line, no branded footer. Paste it anywhere, including commercial work, with no attribution requirement. We meter access via the monthly AI-call limit, not via watermarking the output.
Will free users get a worse summary than paid users?
No — model and pipeline are identical across tiers. The same Claude-class LLM does the synthesis, the same in-browser pdf.js parser extracts the text, the same citation logic links bullets back to source pages. The only difference is volume: 3 summaries per month on free, 250 on Pro, 600 on Pro Plus. Per-summary quality does not change with tier.
How does PDF Pro afford 3 free summaries per month?
By sponsoring them. Each summary is a real LLM call to a hosted model (Anthropic Claude) and costs us money in API fees. We cap free usage at 3 per month so the sponsorship is bounded, and we recoup the cost from users who upgrade to Pro (250/mo, $6.99) or Pro Plus (600/mo, $12.99). The compute does not run on your CPU — pdf.js parsing and citation linking do, but the AI synthesis itself happens server-side. What stays in your browser is the file binary; what travels to the AI is just the extracted text passages needed for the summary.

No trial. No watermark. No card.

Drop a PDF, read the TL;DR, copy the summary. 3 AI summaries per month on the house — your file stays in the browser, only extracted text travels to the AI.
